ARIA / ARIOSO

Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) is a keyboard work first published in 1741 consisting of an aria followed by a set of 30 variations and concluding with a recapitulation of the aria. Here, the aria is performed as a guitar duet with the two parts based on the left and right hands of the keyboard score.
The cantata Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe - 'I stand with one foot in the grave' (BWV 156) was composed in 1729. The opening Sinfonia (or Arioso) for orchestra and oboe solo is performed here as a guitar duet in an arrangement by John Gavall.
